Your friend is not telling you the truth. The only eyewitnesses to the bombings were the aircrews who dropped the bomb and the civilians on the ground. No U.S. invasion vessels were in close proximity to Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The invasion of Kyushu, Japan was planned for Nov. 1, 1945 and was called Operation Olympics.
To place a troopship in close proximity to view the bomb would place them in serious danger. I was in Luzon, Philippines getting ready to join the 1st Corps, 6th Army to invade Japan. Our armada was being prepared to launch the offensive from Okinawa, Philippines and Hawaii. I repeat no Allied vessels where within eyewitness distance from the bomb.
